Thornton Colorado Museums
A rare Triceratops fossil was discovered during excavations at the Thornton Museum of Natural History in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The finds include the remains of a triceratops that lived millions of years ago in the Thornton area north of Denver.
Dr. Joe Sertich is the curator of dinosaurs at the museum and on August 25 he discovered a bone that led to further calls to his museum. Almost immediately he thought it was the bones of a triceratops, so he went to see how the work was progressing to uncover the skull.

Thornton began an explosion of artistic investigation by experimenting with a variety of art forms, from painting to sculpture and photography to the use of animal bones. This eventually led him to develop his own style of painting, which he painted with his wife Amy Thornton for the rest of her life until her death.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science said in a statement that Triceratops lived in the Triassic period about 3.5 million years ago. Colorado is no stranger to animal fossils, but the specimen found lived at the same time as T. rex and Tyrannosaurus, according to the museum's website.
